SWIFT needs your help before I make it translation ready

Help Satish in making SWIFT transaltion ready.

I hope you all are enjoying the v5.0 of SWIFT, I would like to make it translation ready by 15th March.

I need your help before I start working on it. SWIFT has lot of options and it might be difficult for a newbie to figure what a particular option does. Even though I have described each option, they might not be clear enough as I lost the perspective of a regular blogger after working on it for 6 months.

Please report if

  • You have problem figuring out what a particular option does.
  • If it is not obvious.
  • If it is grouped with wrong options.
  • If you can think of a better name or description for the option.

If you have any requests or suggestions for new features feel free to post them here, don’t settle for what you have because it’s a free theme.

If you liked the new version of SWIFT, please post a review on your blog and help it reach more people and compete with the over hyped pricey premium themes.

  1. Whether translation ready for swift.It appears to be not possible to use German language.If not , please do it fast,we are waiting and the translation makes it perfect.Thank you for the support.

  2. Hello Satish, I love the theme. I have an issue with the way it looks in IE and the way it looks with firefox. I use the theme in a magazine option. My left and right columns are leveled well in appearance, when viewed in FIREFOX. However, in my internet explorer it is not leveled. In fact, my contents in the left column are all the way at the bottom of the page and the contents in the middle and right columns remain at the same column.

    I’ll appreciate it if you got back to me, as I would like for it to look the same in internet explorer as it does in firefox.

  3. Is Swift “translation ready” yet? It is a great theme that I really want to use but all my readers speak french! :'(

  4. Alexander did a great job of collecting all of the wordings…the rest of the issues seem to have been addressed with your last drop.

    Good work, again.  Love the layout…especially how customizable it is.

  5. Sorry for starting another comment.
    I have also noticed that when the slider is activated, older posts are not shown underneath the slider.
    This goes for excerpts as well as full posts on the homepage.

  6. The problem of the slider only occurs when certain categories are selected for the slider, which dont seem to differ from other categories.
    Would it also be an idea to have speed settings for the slider?
    PS. the thumbnails in the slider still dont function, the thumbnails on the excerpts do, i had problems with both of them, because my host dont support 777 rights to files.

  7. Dear Satish,
    I have found that when enabling excerpts on Home page in only shows 2 posts maximum.
    I cant seem to adjust anywhere.
    Maybe this is an error?
    And the slider does not find any posts at all its just an empty block right now, with only the number of the posts at the bottom.
    Kind Regards

  8. Sorry for the multiple comments but regarding those dark boxes/button, they’re for categories and appear within the article boxes (top-right part) when the home page is set to Magazine mode (like the Swift home page).
    In the case of my blog, they are superimposed on the text either in the middle or near the bottom. One even appears on the featured article box.
    Thanks.

  9. Uh…
    When I tick the show popular posts option, dark buttons with light scripts appear on the right side of that particular column at regular intervals. I don’t know if it’s peculiar to my blog, I’m using FF.
    Same in Kmeleon and Opera.
    Thanks.

  10. In option to use excerpts on the front/home page…
    The full story button sits right on top of the title of the next article.
    More space between the two would make it easier to scan the home page.
    This theme is rocking. 🙂
    Thanks.

  11. Below I’m both making suggestions on what I think would be better names and terms, as well as correcting a few typos I found (or I think I found, as I’m not a native English speaker):

    a) Header in admin pages:

    * “The fastest loading wordpress themes” -> “The fastest loading WordPress themes”

    * “You are using v5.0” -> “You are using v” + actual version. The version could be a variable inside the code. This way the string to translate would be an easy “You are using v%s” .

    b) Swift Options:

    – General:

    * “Custom Favicon” -> “Custom Favicon:”

    * “Enter the URL of a 16px x 16px Png/Gif image that will represent your website’s favicon.” -> “Enter the URL of a 16px x 16px PNG/GIG image that will be used as your website’s favicon.”

    * “Header Scripts” -> “Custom header code:”

    * “If you need to add scripts to your header (like Mint tracking code, perhaps), you should enter them in the box below.” -> “If you need to add extra content to the header of all the pages on your website, such as additional meta tags or tracking codes, enter them in the box to the left.”

    * “Footer Scripts” -> “Custom footer code:”

    * “Paste your Google Analytics (or other) tracking code here. This will be added into the footer template of your theme.” -> “If you need to add extra content to the footer of all the pages on your website, such as RDF definitions or tracking codes, enter them in the box to the left.”

    * “Feedburner ID” -> “Feedburner ID:”

    * “Enter your Feedburner ID here.” -> “If you have a Feedburner ID, enter it here. Without a Feedburner ID the theme’s Subscribe by E-mail feature on the Single Page settings page won’t work and should be disabled.”

    – Header:

    * “Custom Logo” -> “Custom logo:”

    * “Enter the URL of your logo (http://yoursite.com/logo.png)” -> “Enter the URL of the image to be used as your logo. Notice this causes the blog name and tag line configured in WordPress’ General settings page to not be shown.”

    * “Top Navigation Options” -> “Top navigation bar:”

    * “None” -> “Disabled”

    * “Pages” -> “List pages”

    * “Categories” -> “List categories”

    * “Bottom Navigation Options” -> “Bottom navigation bar:”

    * “None” -> “Disabled”

    * “Pages” -> “List pages”

    * “Categories” -> “List categories”

    * “Append Links to the PAGE navigation in header” -> “Links to be appended to the navigation bar showing the list of pages:”

    * “Add your links in the following format <li><  a href=”http://yourURL.com”> SwiftThems</a></li>” -> “The box to the left allows you to append links to the navigation bar showing the list of pages, if any. Use the following format, repeating as many times as needed, preferably once per line: <li><a href=”http://www.example.com”>Your Title</a></li>”

    * “Append Links to the CATEGORY navigation in header” -> “Links to be appended to the navigation bar showing the list of categories:”

    * “Add your links in the following format <li><  a href=”http://yourURL.com”> SwiftThems</a></li>” -> “The box to the left allows you to append links to the navigation bar showing the list of categories, if any. Use the following format, repeating as many times as needed, preferably once per line: <li><a href=”http://www.example.com”>Your Title</a></li>”

    * “Enter you custom search code” -> “Custom search code:”

    * “This is the place where you add code like Adsense For Search” -> “If you have a custom search code, such as for Adsense for Search, add it to the box to the left.”

    * “(Check this box if you don’t want to display RSS links in the navigation above logo/sitename.)” -> “(Check this box if you don’t want to display your RSS links in the top navigation bar.)”

    * “Disable Search Box” -> “Disable search box”

    * “(Check this box if you don’t want to display search box in the navigation below logo/sitename.)” -> “(Check this box if you don’t want to display the search box in the bottom navigation bar.)”

    * “According to reviewer at theme directoy on wordpress, Themes are not allowed to modify core tables. So Page reorder and Category reorder feature have been removed since v5.02. You can use the plugins My Page Order and My Category Order to modify the order of categories and pages.” -> “According to the reviewer at WordPress.org’s Theme directoy, themes are not allowed to modify core WordPress tables. To become compliant and be listed in the directory, since v5.02 the SwiftTheme had its own page and category reordering features removed. If you need or want to modify the order of categories and pages in an easy way, you can install the My Page Order and My Category Order plugins.”

    * “Select Pages” -> “Pages selection:”

    * “Select the pages you want to include in your nav menu, click the order pages button below to save.” -> “Select the pages you want displayed in the pages-showing navigation bar, if any.”

    * “Select Categories” -> Categories selection:”

    * “Select the categories you want to include in your nav menu, click the order categories button below to save.” -> “Select the categories you want displayed in the categories-showing navigation bar, if any.”

    – Home Page & Archive’s:

    * I think it would be best to rename this settings page itself: “Home Page & Archive’s” -> “Home and Archive Pages”.

    * It’d also be good to be consisten on the case of the “enable” and “disable” words. Below I’m taking the all-uppercase approach for these words on options themselves, and all-lowercase for the option descriptions.

    * “ENABLE Featured post slider” -> “ENABLE the Featured Posts slider”

    * “(Check this box if you would like to ENABLE featured posts slider.)” -> “(Check this box if you would like to enable the Featured Posts slider feature.)”

    * “Featured Category” -> “Featured category:”

    * “Select the category that you would like to have displayed in the featured section on your homepage.” -> “Select the category whose posts you want to have displayed in the Featured Posts slider on your home page.”

    * “Number of Featured Posts” -> “Number of featured posts:”

    * “Select the number of posts to be displayed in slider” -> “Select the number of featured posts to display in the slider.”

    * “Disable thumbnails in slider” -> “DISABLE slider thumbnails”

    * “(Check this box if you would like to DISABLE thumbnails in slider.)” -> “(Check this box if you would like to disable thumbnails in the slider.)”

    * “Disable thumbnails on homepage” -> “DISABLE other home page thumbnails”

    * “(Check this box if you would like to DISABLE thumbnails on homepage.)” -> “(Check this box if you would like to disable thumbnails on the homepage. Applies to all except the slider thumbnails.)”

    * “Display excerpts on home page”

    * “(Excerpt is summary or description of a post)” -> “(Check this box if you would like to display excerpts rather than full posts on the home page. Excerpts are summaries or descriptions of a post. This option doesn’t affect the –more– WordPress function.)”

    * “Display excerpts on archives” -> “Display excerpts on archive pages”

    * “(Excerpt is summary or description of a post)” -> “(Check this box if you would like to display excerpts rather than full posts on archive pages. Excerpts are summaries or descriptions of a post. This option doesn’t affect the –more– WordPress function.)”

    * “Show Full Content” -> “Home page full content posts:”

    * “If you are displaying excerpts on home page, then select the number of full length posts to be displayed on home page.” -> “If you set the home page to show excerpts, select here the number of posts you still want to be shown in their entirety.”

    * “ENABLE popular posts on homepage” -> “ENABLE popular posts on home page”

    * “(Check this box if you would like to ENABLE popular posts on homepage. Note: This feature doesn’t work in magazine layout.)” -> “(Check this box if you would like to enable showing popular posts on the home page. Note: this feature doesn’t work in magazine layout.)”

    * “Number of Popular posts” -> “Number of popular posts:”

    * “Select the number of popular posts you want to display on the home page.” -> “If you set the home page to show popular posts, select here the number of popular posts you want shown.”

    – Single Page:

    * “Display subscribe via EMail box” -> “Display the Subscribe by E-mail box”

    * “(Check this box, if you would like to display EMail Subscription box. You have to enter your feedburner ID in general settings for this to work)” -> “(Check this box if you’d like to display the Subscribe by E-Mail Subscription box at the post’s end. You have to enter your Feedburner ID in the General settings page for this to work.)”

    * “Display Social Bookmarking Icons” -> “Display social bookmarking icons”

    * “(Check this box, if you would like to display social bookmarking Icons at the end of the post.)” -> “(Check this box if you’d like to display social bookmarking icons at the post’s end.)”

    * “Display Author Info” -> “Display author biography”

    * “(Check this box, if you would like to display author bio at the end of the post.)” -> “(Check this box if you’d like to display the author biography at the post’s end.)”

    – Ad Management:

    * “Enable header Ad” -> “Enable the header ad area”

    * “()” -> “(Check this box if you’d like to display an advertisement on the empty header area to the right of the blog name or logo.)”

    * “Ad Code” -> “Ad Code:”

    * “Enter your ad code here, preferably 468*60 ad” -> “Enter on the box to the left the ad code you received from your ad-network, preferably a 468×60 ad.”

    * “Enable ads below the navigation bar” -> “Enable the ad area below the bottom navigation bar”

    * “()” -> “(Check this box if you’d like to display an advertisement below the bottom navigation bar.)”

    * “Ad Code” -> “Ad Code:”

    * “Enter your ad code here, preferably 728*15 list unit or 728*90 lead board ad” -> “Enter on the box to the left the ad code you received from your ad-network, preferably a 728×15 link list unit, or a 728×90 lead-board ad.”

    * “Enable ad’s below title on single post page” -> “Enable the ad area below post titles”

    * “()” -> “(Check this box if you’d like to display an advertisement below the post title on single post pages.)”

    * “Ad Code” -> “Ad Code:”

    * “Enter your ad code here” -> “Enter on the box to the left the ad code you received from your ad-network, preferably a 468×60 ad to be displayed between the post’s title and text, or a 120×600 skyscraper ad to be float-positioned to the left or the right of the post text. To float a skyscraper ad surround the ad code like this: <div style=”float: left; clear: left; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px;”>AD CODE HERE</div> or <div style=”float: right; clear: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;”>AD CODE HERE</div>”

    * “Disable ad’s after post content on single post page” -> “Enable the ad area below the post text”

    * “(Check this box if you would like to ENABLE the ads after post content on single post page.)” -> “(Check this box if you’d like to display an advertisement after the post contents on single post pages.)”

    * “Ad Code” -> “Ad Code:”

    * “Enter your ad code here” -> “Enter on the box to the left the ad code you received from your ad-network, preferably a 468×60 ad to be displayed after the post’s content. For best results clear and center it surrounding the ad code like this: <div style=”clear: both; text-align: center; margin: 10px 0px 0px 0px;”>AD CODE HERE</div>”

    * “Banner-1” -> “1st 125×125 banner image URL:”

    * “Enter your image url here” -> “Enter the URL for the 125×125 image here.”

    * “Banner destination” -> “1st 125×125 banner destination URL:”

    * “Enter destination url here” -> “Enter the destination (link) URL here.”

    * “Banner-2” -> “2nd 125×125 banner image URL:”

    * “Enter your image url here” -> “Enter the URL for the 125×125 image here.”

    * “Banner destination” -> “2nd 125×125 banner destination URL:”

    * “Enter destination url here” -> “Enter the destination (link) URL here.”

    * “Banner-3” -> “3rd 125×125 banner image URL:”

    * “Enter your image url here” -> “Enter the URL for the 125×125 image here.”

    * “Banner destination” -> “3rd 125×125 banner destination URL:”

    * “Enter destination url here” -> “Enter the destination (link) URL here.”

    * “Banner-4” -> “4th 125×125 banner image URL:”

    * “Banner destination” -> “4th 125×125 banner destination URL:”

    * “Enter destination url here” -> “Enter the destination (link) URL here.”

    c) Design Options:

    – Layout Options:

    * “Full width header / 960px header” -> “Header width:”

    * “full” -> “Full width”

    * “960” -> “960 pixels wide”

    * “Select the sidebar postion.” -> “Select the sidebar position:”

    * “LeftSidebar” -> “Left”

    * “RightSidebar” -> “Right”

    * “Magzine / Blog on homepage” -> “Home page style:”

    * “magzine” -> “Magazine”

    * “blog” -> “Blog”

    * “Magzine / Blog on archives” -> “Archive pages style:”

    * “magzine” -> “Magazine”

    * “blog” -> “Blog”

    – Fonts:

    * “Select a Font Family” -> “Font family:”

    * “The font you select will be the primary font used on your blog.” -> “The font family you select will be the primary font used on your blog.”

    * “Select a primary Font Size” -> “Primary font size:”

    * “The font size you select will be the primary font size and the font size of all the other sections will be multiples of it.” -> “The font size you select will be the primary font size used on your blog. All other font sizes will be multiples and submultiples of it.”

    * “Select a Sidebar Font Size” -> “Sidebar font multiplier:”

    * “The font size will be multiplied by the primary font size, for example if your primary font size is 10px and you select .8em here, then the sidebar font size will be 8px” -> “The sidebar font size is proportional to the primary font size. This parameter determines by how much it must be multiplied. For example, if your primary font size is 10px and you select .8em here, the sidebar font size will be 80% of 10px = 8px.”

    * “Select a Footer Font Size” -> “Footer font multiplier:”

    * “The font size will be multiplied by the primary font size, for example if your primary font size is 10px and you select .8em here, then the sidebar font size will be 8px” -> “The footer font size is proportional to the primary font size. This parameter determines by how much it must be multiplied. For example, if your primary font size is 10px and you select .8em here, the footer font size will be 80% of 10px = 8px.”

    – Colors:

    * Sometimes the words “color” and “colors” (US English) are used, other times it’s “colour” and “colours” (British). It’d be better to standardize on either one or the other, including on the “Enable custom colors (Check this box if you want to use custom colours.)” check box, where both are used at the same time.

    An alternative would be to remove the word everywhere it appears except for the “Enable…” check box, since it’s evident all parameters are color-related.

    * Some color names have all words starting with uppercase letters, others have only the first word starting with an uppercase letter, and others still have a mix of uppercase- and lowercase-starting words. It’d be better to also standardize color-name-casing.

    I myself prefer only first words to be uppercase-started, as is probably evident from all my previous title suggestions. 🙂

    * All “BG” everywhere -> “Background” or “background”, depending on the above decision, as there’s no need to abbreviate it.

    * “Header and Navigation Colours” -> “Header and navigation”

    * “Navigation border (Used in WideHeader layout)” -> “Full header navigation border” (or is it “960 px header navigation border”?)

    * “Slider Options” -> “Slider”

    * “Tabber Options” -> “Tabber”

    * “Sidebar Options” -> “Sidebars”

    * “Footer Options” -> “Page footer”

    * All “Widget” inside “Footer Options” -> “Footer”

    * “Comments Template” -> “Comments”

    * “Author Info” -> “Post end”

    * “Magzine box Options” -> “Magazine boxes”

    * “MagBox” -> “Magazine box”

    – Background Images:

    * “Body Background” -> “Body background:”

    * “Enter the URL of BODY background Image” -> “Enter the URL of the image to be used as the page body background.”

    * “Image Repeat” -> “Body background image repeat:”

    * Here I think it would be better to replace the selection box and its text description with two check boxes, “[ ] Repeat image horizontally [ ] Repeat image vertically”, either side by side or one below the other, and let the code deal with it. It’s much clearer to non-programmers than x and y coordinates.

    * “Header Background” -> “Header background:”

    * “Enter the URL of HEADER background Image” -> “Enter the URL of the image to be used as the header background.”

    * Same observation about replacing the selection box and text description applies.

    – Rounded Corners:

    * “(Rounded corners wont look good when the header background is different from body background.)” -> “(Rounded corners don’t look good when the header and body background images are different.)”

    * “Disable rounded corners for SideBar widgets.” -> “Disable rounded corners for Sidebar widgets”

    * “()” -> The description is empty and I have no idea what to write here. 🙂

    – Custom CSS:

    * “()” -> Same thing: empty string and I don’t know how to best describe this.

    * “Enter your Custom CSS code here” -> “Enter your Custom CSS code below:”

    d) Widgets:

    * “Home Page Only Text” -> “SWIFT Home Page-Only Text” (I’m not sure this one is a Swift widget, but if it is, here’s the suggestion)

    * “Email Subscription” -> “SWIFT E-mail Subscription”

    * “You can customize the colours of this widget and feedburner chicklet in the SWIFT colour options page.” -> “You can customize the colours of this widget and of the Feedburner chicklet in the SWIFT Color settings page.” or “You can customize the colors of this widget and of the Feedburner chicklet in the SWIFT Colors settings page.”

    * “You can customize the colours of this widget in the SWIFT colour options page.” (in the SWIFT Tabs widget) -> “You can customize the colours of this widget in the SWIFT Color settings page.” or “You can customize the colors of this widget in the SWIFT Colors settings page.”

    * “swift 125×125 ads” -> “SWIFT 125×125 Ads”

    * “Tick the banners which you want to show in this widget, order can be adjusted in SWIFT options page.” -> “Tick the banners which you want to show in this widget. The banners themselves can be defined in the SWIFT Ad Management settings page.”

    * “swiftPopularPosts” -> “SWIFT Popular Posts”

    * “Number of Popular posts to show:” -> “Number of popular posts to show:”

    e) Visible to the world:

    – I still don’t have enough content to comment on these aspects of the theme.

    f) Groupings:

    – The above is already gigantic. I’ll let the groupings for another time.

    1. :O thats a long scary list.

      I implemented most of the suggestions you made, except for the colors page and a few other. The whole correction process took a lot of time, you should have spent more time than me going through each and every option. Thanks for your time, I appreciate your help.

      Thanks a lot :).

      I will release the update of the theme with these corrections tomorrow.

      1. You’re welcome. 🙂 This is an awesome theme, and now I’m quite masochistically looking forward into going through that list all over again, now for translating it into Brazilian Portuguese. 😉
        One extra suggestion: I’m going to build multi-language blogs using both Swift and the WPML plugin. From the basic tests I made Swift works well with WPML, but it’d be extra nice if, in addition to being translation-ready, Swift also included explicit WPML support, specially given the premium features the theme provides, such as the slider.
        The WPML website has a guide for adding explicit support. I don’t know PHP well, but from the little I know it seems to be easy enough, mostly a matter of including a .php file, replacing a few WordPress function calls by wpml_ versions, and reserving an area for the language selector (to the right of one or both navigation bars would be an ideal place):
        http://wpml.org/documentation/support/creating-multilingual-wordpress-themes/
        Please think about it, okay?
        Thanks!

        1. I see the new WPML version 1.7 hooks into everything themes use, so there is no need anymore to change them so that they’re fully compatible. Quite nice!

          But I’d still love for an easy way to place a language selector in one of the navigation bars, as it doesn’t look quite right in the sidebar.

      2. I like the human feedbak from the creator. This is the most involved I’ve been with a theme creator. I honestly thought about making my own, by I don’t need to now thanks to swift theme. (By the way “The fastest loading WordPress themes” doesn’t make since, when there’s only one) “The fastest loading WordPress theme”

  12. A few thoughts ….
    Design Styles: magazine vs blog style on front page. If there is some way to simply explain the outcomes of these choices in a popup box perhaps or on the support forum, that would save some questions for first timers.
    Custom fonts: if a change is made in fonts, user should be sure to check the footer copyright and credit line after the change is made, I had to increase the desired sidebar font size up one for footer copyright and credit lines to look right.
    Background images: saw a hint in a forum the other day that was like a lightening bolt…the background image should be narrow and wide or visa versa … it is repeated … so you do not have a large background image slowing your site down. Having this explanation somewhere might help.
    A ?: URL for the images on favicon, logo, and backgrounds: are these images loaded in media files or are they loaded into the theme image files via FTP? Everything works for me, just think people wonder.
    URL for images on posts: When inserting an image into a post, do you have the option of linking it to another page or even another site if you use the custom field image form below?
    Custom fields for image vs. thumbnails automatically created. After I started using this custom fields options, my images are more “stable”. Not sure people understand the use of the custom field option.
    You may want to put a link directly to WP help site on your user guide page. Very helpful and can save you and your forum users some time. Lots more basic WP info than ever needed in Swift User Guide yet needed for people not yet WP proficient.
    The only other hint you may want to give is that “Duplicate content on front page (same stories in slider and in magazine stories below) is not good if you’re looking for traffic from Google search results. Write more posts and choose one specific category without duplicate content for your slider.”
    Thanks again for all the work you have done that has saved us so much time and helped us look better online. 🙂
