Different number of posts on the home page and archives

It’s not advisable to show full length posts or excerpts on archives due to duplicate content issues. So we introduced the list style to display post, but then there wont be enough content on archive pages. To address this problem, in this version of Swift you have an option to set the number of posts you want to display on archive pages.

When I’m searching for answers on Google, or stumbling, or browsing leisurely the designer and developer in me is constantly looking for the color schemes, layouts, innovative placements and fancy java script effect. They were all put to use in the designing the child theme of Swift for TechBU, a theme that’s inspired from all around the web.

TechBU Navigation Inspired from Apple.Com (Click for full size image)

I always wanted a design with 3+ column layout for TechBU, even for this site  to ( A new look is in the pipeline ). But when designing for monitors at 1024*768px resolution, three columns looks cramped with awkwardly small lines.  Luckily there are not many users on those old monitors today, thanks to the LCDS and the notebooks. When I checked my stats they were less than 10%.

This 10% wasn’t enough to convince me to goto 1200px wide design. I often visit apple.com but the launch of iPhone 5 kept me on the site longer than usual, that’s when I said to myself, when the leaders in design innovation and the company obsessed with user experience and usability makes the move to 1200px wide design why not me, and the redesign was started.

Apart from the site width, other things inspired from Apple are

• Navigation, on hover and active links have a very different and fresh styling though.
• Font color.

TheNextWeb.Com

Featured section on the homepage is inspired from TheNextWeb.Com. I’m impressed with the post navigation on it, that will added to TechBU in the next iteration.

TechBU featured section inspired from TNW. TNW’s version looks better than TechBU because of the 3 columns and liberal spacing. I had to use 4 columns on TechBU else it would be monotonous with another 3 column row below it. What’s your opinion?

The nice little sticky header is inspired from TechCrunch.Com, the Social share icons are taken from Mashable and the body background is taken from SmashingMagazine.

Sticky Sidebars

Widget added in this new section won’t stick to the top.

When you have a very long post or a post with lot of comments when the user scrolls the page, your sidebar moves up and making 30% of the screen space useless. With sticky sidebars, the sidebar will stick to the view port giving your sidebar content more exposure. This option is ideal for ads, showing your top quality content, or news letter or social media subscriptions.

Using sticky elements

Using sticky navigation and nav ad is very simple, just enable them from the newly added section at Swift Design Options -> Sticky Elements.
For sidebars, enable it at Swift Design Options -> Sticky Elements. Then go to widgets page. There you will see new sidebar section called “Non Sticky Sidebar”. Widgets added to this will not stick to the top, everything below will stick to the view port.

Custom widths

This feature was asked many times, my obsession with golden ratio kept it away from Swiftler’s. I’m very sorry for that, but better late than never, its here with a very simple UI. The pic says everything you need to know.

Spicing it up with CSS3

Recently I checked twitter bootstrap for another project of mine, it has come very cleanly styled elements which will be a good addition to Swift. I will slowly be adding those styles to Swift. To start with I added gradient to the solid navigation style.

Clearing w3tc minify cache on updating options

One of the most frequently asked question is color not changing, setting not updated.  90% of the time its because users don’t disable caching for admins and don’t clear cache before checking the newly changed options. To address this issue swift will automatically clear the minify cache for you on updating options

Been working like crazy for the past few weeks to bring a whole lot of new features to Swift and make it even more easy to use and today I feel proud to bring in front of you the new Swift v6.2.0.It is going to make designing your site a fun job and you may even have a chance to make money selling your color schemes in future. Color Schemes page

The major addition to this version of Swift is the color schemes page. You may think many themes already come with predefined color schemes, so whats the dig deal. The way Swift implements these color schemes makes it special and easy to use.

Usually the color schemes included with the themes are CSS files overriding the base color scheme. You have to know some CSS and involves code editing to customize the color scheme further to your linking. It makes it very hard for people with little knowledge of CSS and sometimes even for people with decent knowledge of CSS and HTML5. In Swift, when you select any color scheme, colors of various elements from the selected color scheme are loaded into Swift color options page. Thus giving you the ability to fine tune the color scheme to your liking, to match your company colors without any need for template edits.

When you use too many similar colors it will have a jarring effect on the readers. This little tool will help you solve that problem, and guide you through the customization process.

Distraction free color options

Though the ability to customize every element of the page is a good thing, when you have lot of colors to select it can be a time taking process and sometimes very confusing. All the color options are hidden behind small and cute labels, you can pick the section whose colors you want to change and edit them without getting distracted from other sections or editing one section instead of the other.

The future of Swift

I’m working on three things at the moment

1. Developing marketing material for Swift affiliates so that you promote the theme you love easily.
2. A market place where you can sell/buy Swift color schemes and font sets.
3. Enhancements to responsive layout like.
   • Adding option to disable some of the widgets when the site is viewed on mobile.
   • Show different umber of posts on home page for desktop and mobile visitors.
   • Option to stop loading comments on mobile devices.

Last three weeks have been very hectic, will take break for 2-3 days and will be back with a tutorial and tips on developing color schemes.

10 days and the issue is yet to be resolved

The only reason I started using them was Indian buyers can not use paypal.  But after the way their support dealt my issue,  I’m never ever going to use them or recommend to anyone.
